A Man Cub!

I should probably update my blog to say- Baby Asher is here! He was born on June 22, at 3:44 am. He weighed 7 lb and 11 oz, and was 21 in long. He has the sweetest temperament and is the cutest little thing! I am truly smitten with this one :)

Despite all the "complications" during my pregnancy (I don't really believe they were complications, but I digress) the labor and birth went very smoothly and I was able to deliver in the water like I had planned. Everyone asks me, "how was the water birth?" and I don't really know how to answer that. I feel like I should say, "oh, it was amazing!" but really... it was still giving birth. Unmedicated. Which really, can never be amazing, if you ask me! It was painful, exhausting and scary. But at the same time, it was quick, and my recovery has been great. I'm so glad I waited until my body was ready rather than giving in to being induced. I would not have been able to do a long, drawn-out labor without an epidural.

He is two weeks old now... and yesterday at his weigh in he was 10 lb 2 oz! Wow!! I suppose it helps that he nurses around the clock :) He hasn't been quite the natural at nursing that Annabel was, but he has definitely learned. He was born with a "tongue tie," where the frenulum of his tongue was attached to the tip, making it difficult to get a good latch. My uncle, who is a doctor, volunteered to clip this for him, so we had that done when he was less than a week. I was pretty hesitant about it at first, but it has made a world of difference and I'm so glad we did it earlier rather than later.

It has definitely been an adjustment having him here. Poor Annabel, while so excited about her baby brother, certainly doesn't know what to think about sharing her mommy with him. She's been pretty attached to Derek lately, which I guess makes me kind of sad, but also thankful that she has a place to feel secure. She told me the other day, "Asher has a mommy, and I have a daddy!" I suppose that's probably the way it seems to her right now. I know it will just take a while to get back to a comfortable homeostasis for our family.

I will try to upload some pictures soon.... right now I keep getting an error message so I'll try again later! We have INTERNET now, so I really have no excuse not to keep up the blog these days :)

I was wondering how Annabel was adjusting. I'm sure it will just take some time for her! Glad recovery is going so well!

when i had ryann, the lactation consultant told me that it seems girl babies tend to have an easier time figuring out nursing...i know that's surely been true for my kids!
